Why Groove Matters More Than You Think

When I first got into drumming, I was obsessed with complexity. Chops, odd-time signatures, fills—those were my priorities. I wanted to sound impressive. But after years of gigging, recording, and working with serious musicians, I had to face a hard truth: none of that matters if your time isn’t solid and your groove doesn’t feel good.

Groove isn’t just something that happens. It’s something you craft—intentionally, carefully, and with deep attention. When a groove is locked in, everything else falls into place. The band tightens up. The music breathes. And most importantly, the crowd connects. People don’t dance to complexity—they dance to feel.

Developing this level of groove takes more than practicing a few funk beats or memorizing shuffle patterns. It requires a shift in focus. You have to zoom in on the micro-details: note placement, dynamics, consistency, and the elusive feel we call “the pocket.” That’s exactly why I created the Magnetic Groove course—to give drummers a clear, direct path to mastering this often misunderstood skill. Because once you can groove, everything else gets easier—and a lot more fun.
