I realized that the most powerful and effective drumming was actually about feel, solid time, and a nuanced approach to serving the music.

I decided to find this missing key, and spent over a decade ferociously studying the most well respected drummers in rock and pop music recording history.

I wanted to know why a pro-level drummer can take a very simple groove and make it sound amazing, while an intermediate drummer can play the same groove and lack the power and energy of the pros…

I began to see the concept of groove as something far beyond the notes… I began to understand that it’s not just the notes, but how you play them.

I discovered that a solid groove has a set of expressive qualities that produces a field of groove. Think of this field of groove as a magnetic field, which has a strong pull on the musical structures in a song.

The field of groove is like an invisible force which works as a unifying principle, bringing the musical structures into rhythmic alignment.

This invisible force is what I call a Magnetic Groove. It’s a powerful groove with just the right feel, expressive nuances, and unshakable confidence which brings the music to life and makes everyone, from the band to the audience, feel connected.

I spent years thinking about this, and figuring out how to teach others how to play the drums in this way. And that’s what eventually led to the creation of Magnetic Groove, available as an online course with video and pdf content, or a physical book with over 130 pages of carefully created content.
